before I stray too far, can anyone tell me what a file format documentation should include and what it look like (an example of good practice would be appreciated)?

The file only explains the basic structure of the file format. It doesn't explain what each key/entry is for.
btw, this thread is linked from http://www.alain.knaff.lu/howto/MozillaCustomization/ . The page has link to online utility to convert registry.dat to/fro xml format. Haven't tried 'em yet, but should be good :-) ( it's also the reason why I've to finish this doc (the original post was way encrypted)).
