I had information on resources for the World War II project ready to type a
couple of days ago, but could never get to a computer. Some of these have
been referenced earlier. I haven't seen some of these, but have read their
reviews on amazon and those really make me want to come team teach with
someone with this unit. Some of my favorite authors are included here as
well. So here goes: The Butterfly by Patricia Polacco, Always Remember
Me: How One Family Survived World War II by Marisabina Russo, Let the
Celebrations Begin! by Julie Vivas, I Will Come Back for You: a Family in
Hiding During World War II by Marisabino Russo, Lost Childhood: My Life in
a Japanese Prison Camp During World War II by Annelex Hofstra Layson, The
Harmonica by Tony Johnston, Terrible Things -an Allegory of the Holocaust
(Remember Edmund Burke's quote, "All that is necessary for the triumph of
evil is that good men do nothing?" by Eve Bunting, Star of Fear, Star of
Hope by Jo Hoestlandt, The Cats in Krasinski Square by Karen Hesse, Benno
and the Night of Broken Glass by Meg Wiviott, Six Million Paper Clips: the
Making of a Children's Holocaust Memorial by Peter W. Schroeder and Dagmar
Schroeder-Hildebrand, I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Hana Volavkova, Rose
Blanche by Christoph Gallaz, Erika's Story by Ruth VanderZee, Willy and
Max: A Holocaust Story by Amy Littlesugar, Four Perfect Pebbles by Lisa
Perl, No Pretty Pictures: a Child of War by Anita Lobel, The Bracelet by
Yoshiko Uchida.

There are some amazing books here. Many are realistic fiction, but some
are nonfiction representing the best of nonfiction.

When I taught first grade and we discussed the Civil War, my children
always had a few days at the beginning where they were just astonished and
numbed that there was a time in our history where men owned men. I can
imagine how hard this topic is to believe for fourth graders, but I truly
think it is appropriate (an introduction to the halocaust, I mean) here. I
didn't attempt to provide a balance here, but that's probably important.
Few of these are Pacific rather than European.
