Folks,
Jamie Nicol has added a new tiling backend on Android which, among
other things, should allow for jank-free panning/zooming. It's prefed
off right now in Nightly, but it would be great if people could turn
it on and let us know how well it's working for you. The pref to flip
is gfx.use-surfacetexture-textures. I think we'll probably try to turn
it on in Nightly 59 if things go well.
Has the behavior of this pref changed recently? I turned it on last
month (and re-enabled it recently when I noticed that the pref had
somehow been reset), after which I experienced what seemed to be a
significant improvement in pan/zoom responsiveness.
But yesterday and this morning that behavior has regressed, and I once
again experience a lot of jank when panning (unsure about zoom, which I
do less often).
I also just noticed that Firefox appears to be using a huge amount of
power. Currently it's at 42% of "app usage since full charge (3h 30m
ago)," even though I haven't used it much this morning ("screen usage
8m"). And it climbed from 40% to 42% usage while I was typing this
paragraph.
So perhaps what I'm experiencing is actually a symptom of another problem.
