Hi all, I want to send an update about the Android team's plans for changing our current reading list implementation.
We've been thinking a lot about improving the way our users discover, save, and revisit content. Our product and UX teams have put together a few documents [1][2] that talk about some of these plans, most of which is inspired by work that our user research team has been doing [3]. To move forward on these plans, we decided the first step we want to take is moving the Reading List (back) into Bookmarks. This change means that Reading List items will automatically sync and appear in the awesome-screen, since they will really be bookmarks under the hood. It also means there will be less swiping through many home panels just to find your Reading List items. We plan to keep Reader View and continue to save Reader View items for offline use (and promote that not-so-widely-known feature!). So here's a basic breakdown of our plan: * Remove the Reading List panel, and migrate existing Reading List items to bookmarks * Create a Reading List "smart folder" in Bookmarks to display your saved Reader View items * Create an indicator on bookmark items to show which items are available offline * Remove "Add to Reading List" functionality from our UI * Promote Reader View Anthony has been working on UX flows in Invision [4], so you can look at that for a more visual representation of these points. UI details are subject to change (as always), but we're converging on the experience we'd like to build. All of this work will be tracked in a meta bug [5], so you can follow along there as we start to dig into this work. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. And more generally, we always track all our work in our roadmap in Aha [6][7], so feel free to contact me if you have any questions about any items there (or if you want to request access to the full-featured version of the roadmap, it's just a limitation of Aha! that we can't make that default accessible to the public).
