hi chris & warran, thanks for your replies.
after sending my post last night I played around with tracker / search that I think partly comes with ubuntu, but one has to install some further add-ons. the name search function works super and I am pretty sure it has indexed all file names and it looks in that index, when searching for file names, because results appear quasi instantaneously. However the "contains the text" function is horrible. I just delivers poor or no results at all. Since I often need to search files to specific texts (not only file names) I would require software that imitates google desktop (now dead, weep weep). Actually I did man find, but I skimmed through it and I could not find the function appropriate to find the text in the file. I am sure there is a function in find but I just couldn't find it. Anyways, if you guys come across some really excellent search utilty, let me know. thanks; John On Tue, Jan 24, 2012 at 9:11 AM, Chris Abela <[email protected]> wrote: > On Jan 24, 2012 12:01 AM, "john axiak" <[email protected]> wrote: >> >>> Hi All, >>> >>> recently I migrated one of my pc to linux and I have a search issue. >>> Before I used to use google desktop (before migrating) however this option >>> is not available any longer because google no longer supports desktop and >>> therefore I cannot get it installed longer.
