I second ntfsundelete. They didn't have a bootable ISO when I needed it, but
it worked wonders for a friend of mine.
You will definately not recover the files which got overwritten by the
Ubuntu distribution. However if his mail is all in one file, I doubt he will
manage to recover it without some other utility to repair the PST file.
