It can be useful in order to keep non linux-savvy users happy, although I wouldn't dream of using it personally. I don't mind it looking like Windows 7, but Windows XP? What I do like is using Gnome-Do ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Do) The screenshots are old, try it out on the latest Ubuntu, or any modern Gnome distro, and it looks great, and functions very nicely indeed.
