It seems that our server problems were caused by the /var partition that
filled up.

The server was completely refusing to respond - even on the console. When
Keith restarted it, I logged in via ssh but the apache process started
multiplying like rabbits on viagra, and in less than 2 minutes there were
more than 50 apache processes eating the CPU.

Anyway I slaughtered the apaches, resized the partition to 5G (I love LVM)
and restarted mysql and apache. So far it seems to be behaving like rabbits
on contraceptives - diligently at it, but a much more sensible 12 processes.

Thanks Keith and Eric for resuscitating the server.
