I'm no expert in linux! I'm just passing on information or experience installing Ubuntu. I don't know if it's suitable for the IT editor of the Times.
Just to make it easy for anybody to install the most popular distro of linux (ubuntu) I would suggest the following url. http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-ubuntu-8.04-lts-hardy-heron One would get the free ubuntu from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download . Please remember to burn the CD as image! One has to insert the CD in the drive and choose installation. One may select not to install but try the CD without changing anything on one's PC; or one may select to install it but would still like to have windows . This is what we call dual boot. So every time that one puts on the computer, one can choose Windows or linux. I'm going to be telegraphic in order to avoid confusion for the first time user. After inserting the CD one has to make some choices. Select your language and hit enter. Select install Ubuntu and hit enter. After the black and orange screen there should be the installation wizard. It will help you through all the stages. Choose your language and hit forward. Select timezone (you should point to Malta in the map) and proceed. Select keyboard and proceed (there should be a space where you can test the keyboard layout especially the quotation marks and the sign for the email address 'at') Next comes partitioning ie how to divide and subdivide your hard disk. You can use the one suggested (whole hard disk or only a part of it or else manual for those who are familiar with partitions). Now you can do your first account with your name, password etc.... Then there is a summary of all your choices. You can always go back and change. If you click ok then installation proceeds. It will ask for a re-start. Just press ok. When it re-starts it will ask you for the username and password (defined by you earlier) Voila you have your desktop with many programs to be used by you.
