Hello,
Thanks for the help on RedHat 8, but I still can't get the internet to
work - and it's getting stranger by the minute. Have a look:

>>>Ramon: Try using the ping command. First, ping your ISP's DNS server
(you can find the IP address in /etc/resolv.conf while you're
>>>connected).

Erm, no I can't. When I access /erc/resolv.conf all I find is "search
localdomain" That’s all.

>>>Ramon: try pinging a server by name - the ping command should at
least tell you the IP address.

It doesn't do that either. I tried "ping www.redhat.com" and the result
was "Ping: Unknown Host"

>>>Ramon: If these don't work, as root type the command "route". It
should give you a list of IP addresses.

Now this is REALLY strange "route : command not found"

>>>Ramon: the file /var/log/messages should contain information from the
pptp process at the very end, just after connecting. This too >>>might
give you a clue to what's going in.

Here's the stuff I found relevant:

Feb 1 10:26:43 localhost pptp[1450]:
log[pptp_dispatch_ctrl_packet:pptp_ctrl.c:580]: Client connection
established
Feb 1 10:26:44 localhost pptp[1450]:
log[pptp_dispatch_ctrl_packet:pptp_ctrl.c:708]: Outgoing call
established (call ID 0, peer's call ID 0).
Feb 1 10:26:44 localhost pppd[1451]: pppd 2.4.1 started by root, uid 0
Feb 1 10:26:44 localhost pppd[1451]: Using interface ppp0
Feb 1 10:26:44 localhost pppd[1451]: Connect: ppp0 <-->/dev/pts/0
Feb 1 10:26:44 localhost /etc/hotplug/net/agent: assuming ppp0 is
already up
Feb 1 10:26:47 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
ppp-compress-21
Feb 1 10:26:47 localhost modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
ppp-compress-21
Feb 1 10:26:47 localhost pppd[1451]: local IP address 212.56.132.76
Feb 1 10:26:47 localhost pppd[1451]: remote IP address 192.168.1.100

This log looks a little curious to me.

>>>Ramon: Note that if you've got an Alcatel Speedtouch Home modem (not
the USB variety), in reality you've got the Pro model - all it >>>takes
is a little hacking and your modem becomes a gateway, firewall and
router.

Yes, I've known about that for a while, and known people who have
successfully managed to hack it. Isn't it a little dangerous though? I
wouldn't like my dad to assassinate me!

>>>Mark: Probably the gateway is no setup. type route and default should
be ppp0 if not, go to /etc/sysconfig and edit the file called
>>>network. it should have the following 2 entries (at least) GATEWAY=""
GATEWAYDEV=ppp0

I would try that, but as said above, route doesn't work :(

Hope you can help,

Keith
