Usually, you can find the logs in /var/log/; there are messages for the whole system in "messages", "boot" and "dmsg" for boot time messages. Re. RH8, my personal opinion is that it's not the best option, yet; better stick with 7.3. And, RedHat was never famous for it's adsl connectivity friendlines.
