Have you tried running an 'smtpctl trace expand' command to see where
it might be looping?
Yes. No indication of looping in my logs when sending to or receiving
from all of my mail domains, as well as using my Gmail account for testing.
I've had my current setup for over a year without any problem (first and
only time I've seen this looping issue) and I receive about a hundred
messages per day across all of my mail accounts.
It just seems like there was something in that spam email that triggered
this issue. For reference, I posted that spam email, headers, and error
messages in my original post.
At first I thought that my server was compromised. But after some more
investigation, I don't think that is the case. Then I thought my
configuration was the issue, but I don't see any problems with it at
this point. Now it just seems like an anomaly.
In the "spam email" the "TO" header is "pachl <[email protected]>". I
thought the display name "pachl" could be an issue because my UNIX
account on the system is "pachl". I thought that maybe there was some
looping occurring between the system and virtual aliases. But I'm
guessing that shouldn't be a problem. I tried sending test emails using
that exact display name and email address, but all mails deliver
correctly and without error.
What else can I try or think about? Or should I just give up because
it's just one email in thousands?
Thanks everyone.
Clint
