hah, thanks to matthieu, suggesting a full power cycle, halt -p and
start again "fixed" the problem. Before that, I only suspended/resumed
the box, and never had X staying black after a reboot. The coincidence
of the fresh installation of latest update somehow lead me assume wrong
things.
