Just a shot in the dark:If the problem is with the network, maybe the problem is from the net (cables, switches, hub, routers, etc.)
You could try to ping the machines from a laptop connected by a cross-cable... If the required hardware is at hand and you have access to the machines this is going to cost you very little time
