dunno if it is related, although last friday i've seen a problem with my Option Globetrotter PCMCIA card, when the card was pulled out, a similar "not busy" message appeared at the console. the PCMCIA slot went dead. the card is actually a USB controller sitting on the PCMCIA and then there is a USB modem connected to that controller. i've never seen such things before. the system i run is somewhat current (i cannot access it now, will be able at tuesday). at that time i thought it was an accidental glitch, now i see i'll need to take a better look...
