A very useful command (at times) is:
# dmesg | grep not
This will show any hardware that is not configured (i.e. no hardware driver)
I have a soundblaster audio card. It has a firewire section.
This shows up as not configured. Therefore, until and if someone writes
such a hardware driver,
that portion of the sound card cannot be made to work, period.
This probably won't solve your problem, but is one of several good first
steps with hardware problems in general.
