I would like to setup a small box to backup some data and operate some
basic network job. I mainly see the following boxes:

_ Thecus N2100 (with 2 internal disks)

2 disks in an N2100 might get a bit warm, one might be a better
idea.

The network connection is a little slow under OpenBSD.

The fan is a bit noisy.

_ Plextor PX-EH40L but seems to be very slow (1)
_ Thecus N1200 (binaries compatible with macppc)

Of these I'd probably look at N1200.

Does anybody have some experiences / advises about those devices?
In that case, what would you recommend to me?

I have ~ 8 Plextors, two running in my home, others are well in other
places. They work, not fast, but you didn't say what you intended
to use them for, unless of course that's why you included the link.
I'm lazy and don't follow links.

Funny thing about the Plextors, last week I had a power event at
home. Everything electronic went into an odd state, not rebooted,
just odd, except the two Plextors, they kept running. Their pretty
low power so the capacitors in the wall wart must be large enough
to handle a power event that nothing else could, including my
cordless phone.
