I'd recommend building some Supermicro boxes on the 512L-260B/PDSBM-LN2+ (1u, s775, 946gz) platform. You can build a very nice box and pair it with riser card and a quad port DFE-570TX NIC and come in well under your $1500 budget. If you need exact part numbers, I can get you the ones we use.
