Hi there,
I have a ral in hostap mode, which works wonderfully. With a high-quality
external antenna, I regularly get more than 20 MB/sec throughput. I don't
need an external Access Point anymore, the ral works great.
I also have a Nintendo Wii console. It has a built-in wireless card, which
you can use to connect the console to the Internet. While the console finds
and associates with the ral just fine, the actual data transfer seems
problematic. The built-in Wii Store functionality (which accesses
Nintendo's servers) is very slow, and online play is impossible. The
connection to the central infrastructure (Nintendo WFC) will often work,
but every time I'll get disconnected when I'm a few minutes into a game or
I can't even start or join a game.
One of the things I tried was connecting an Access Point (without any
router functionality, just a basic Access Point from 2003 or so) to my
wired network, and letting the Wii associate with that Access Point.
The result was that the Wii now had perfect connectivity.
The OpenBSD box has a ral0 interface, an sk0 interface to the Internet, and
an rl0 interface to the LAN. rl0 is attached to a small switch, and I
attached the Access Point to that switch. The Wii is subject to the same
NAT and firewall rules in both the ral0 and rl0 case. I've tried with and
without (WEP) encryption, both 11b and 11g mode.
I don't think signal strength is the cause here, because right next to the
Wii a laptop can connect just fine to both ral0 and the Access Point.
As you can see from the dmesg below, this is on OpenBSD 4.3, but 4.4-current
as downloaded yesterday doesn't seem to be different in this respect.
Could there be something in the Wii that makes it less happy with the ral
interface than with the Access Point?
