Right. Unfortunately, the only online reference I could find indicating the significance of this is wikipedia's talk (!) page for birthday attack. Neither the actual birthday attack page nor the disk encryption theory page mention it at all, and just about every other search hit is a cheap wikipedia knockoff. So sad.
