Well, you should use 'alias', it's the correct way of doing this. What
makes you think it didn't work ? Did you ping the aliased IP address
and got no reply ? Or did you `ifconfig <interface>` and not see the
extra addresses ?
You should use `ifconfig -A` to see all alias information (read
ifconfig(8) for more details, I've just filed a PR wrt to this
particular option). Using alias works, I'm adding aliases to
interfaces as I'm typing this ;)
