Valid concerns. The choice of format cannot be avoided, though: there is no one-size fits all solution for image formats, but whatever is chosen, the output from the first pass from each new scanning project should be a lossless format.
Batch processing is often the most efficient method: scan, ocr, proof text, thumbnails and display bitmaps.
If you have to repeat a step, using lossless means that you won't have to re-scan. Or, in other words, that you can repeat a step for marginal effort without re-scanning.
Try a few different format configurations. -Lars
