See above. I've seen various mis/non-detects with a port is overloaded.

It is run automatically... by rc.

You mean when you plug in an interface you want netstart to run? We
don't do that because we don't always know what net configuration you
want. I often plug in interfaces but don't want to configure them.

Have a read through the hotplugd manpage: writing a script to do
something (like "exec /etc/netstart axe0") when the interface is
plugged in is trivial to do though.
