I'm experiencing a highly reproducible issue with TCP traffic on
a couple PowerMac G4s. Incoming TCP traffic is slow: only about
18-20 Mbps on a 100 Mbps link. Outgoing TCP connections, on the
other hand, run just shy of 100 Mbps, as does UDP in either
direction.
I have reproduced this symptom on two PowerMac G4 "AGP Graphics"
machines with clean installs of 4.1 and using all three of the
xl, vr, and gem network device drivers. PF and
net.inet.ip.forward were disabled during TTCP testing (in fact,
no additional software whatsoever has been installed aside from
ttcp and netperf). The dmesg of one of these machines is
provided at the end of this message.
For reference, I performed the same test on my laptop, which
runs 4.1/i386. It does not suffer this performance issue.
I'd be the last to shout "bug" in a crowded theater, so I was
hoping that somebody here could point out what I'm most likely
doing wrong; or, failing that, that somebody more familiar with
the architecture than I could help me determine whether my
systems have brought out some sort of elusive misbehavior.
Thanks!
Mark
