Sounds like you want LogLevel=QUIET and Batchmode=yes. eg:
$ ssh -o PreferredAuthentications=password -o LogLevel=QUIET \
-o BatchMode=yes localhost
$ echo $?
255
You can also put them in ~/.ssh/config or ssh_config.
