hi,
i just recently upgraded our firewall from 3.7 to 3.8 and am now
seeing errors on our internal interface:
fw:~> netstat -i -I em1 1
em1 in em1 out total in total out
packets errs packets errs colls packets errs packets errs colls
868776781 9354286 861778095 0 0 3822691341 9354286 3782693933 0

1604 4 1642 0 0 4961 4 4988 0 0
that is a error rate of about 1%. to be honest i don't know if i was
seeing this when the firewall was running 3.7, i can't remember if i
checked. here is some info about em1:
fw:~> ifconfig em1
em1: flags=8943<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,PROMISC,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
lladdr 00:03:47:72:95:4b
media: Ethernet autoselect (1000baseT full-duplex)
status: active
inet 142.103.3.254 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 142.103.3.255
inet6 fe80::203:47ff:fe72:954b%em1 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x2
the interface is in promiscuous mode since argus
(www.qosient.com/argus) is listening on em1. i stopped argus and it
made no noticeable difference to the number of err packets. em1 is
connected to our passport 8600 router, behind which our department
live. em0 is to the outside world, and i see no error packets there.
pf is running, and appears to be doing its thing ok. infact
everything seems fine, i guess a few packets not making it isn't the
end of the world, tcp just retries, but it would be nice to know what
is going on.
i'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do. it would be nice to figure
out if the packets are coming from a particular source or are they
random. but i can't figure that out with tcpdump, can you? is the
machine just overloaded, is the nic driver buggy?
any help would be much appreciated. below is the dmesg output.
thanks!
matt
