It's possible that support for your NIC was added between 3.8 and 3.9; you could try booting from the install kernel (bsd.rd) for a -current snapshot and see if it behaves. If so, you could wait for 3.9 as it's likely to work there too (not too long a wait if you've ordered CDs), or run -current snapshots if you are happy to do so.
