What it means is that you are in disaster recovery mode and fancy commands are less likely to be successful than deliberate straight forward operations. That being said, if you cannot directly attach another USB drive to the system then you may have to resort to "fancy", but generally the simpler the better. Your immediate goal is to get a raw copy of the unencrypted partition (or entire disk) if possible. Once you have that, make another copy of it and start using whatever tools you can to inspect the raw data to discover whether or not it is likely that you'll be able to recover anything from it.
