Thanks, Mike. Testing with curl led me to figuring out I was missing a
stanza in my httpd.conf. Oops.
Once the following was added back to httpd.conf:
location "/.well-known/acme-challenge/*" {
root "/acme"
request strip 2
}
things returned to normal:
curl -6 --head --url
https://www.example.com/.well-known/acme-challenge/test
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Connection: keep-alive
Content-Length: 5
