Yes, that was it... The bootcmd was set to 'fatload usb 0 $loadaddr bsd; bootoctlinux rootdev=/dev/sd0', which I had to change to 'fatload usb 0 $loadaddr boot; bootoctlinux rootdev=/dev/sd0' and then the upgrade went through fine.
