Can you elaborate please? I was under the impression that
video(1) can only do the video -e encodings, namely:
Valid arguments are ‘uyvy’, ‘yuy2’ and ‘yv12’. The default
is ‘yuy2’ unless file is being used and only supports ‘uyvy’,
in which case ‘uyvy’ will be used by default.
What "ld tricks" would make video(1) recognize the mjpeg modes?

Indeed, ffplay -f v4l2 -list_formats all -i /dev/video0
reveals MJPEG support in most webcams here. I have one that
only does mjpeg, so ffmpeg is currently the only way to use it.
