That should not be needed, /etc/rc.d/unbound already sets daemon_flags to "-c /var/unbound/etc/unbound.conf" If /var/unbound/etc/unbound.conf is not readable by the _unbound user it would explain the problem. I was able to reproduce it by making /var/unbound/etc/unbound.conf owned by root and mode 0600. - todd
