For those who did not already know, vmd can run Linux guests with its seabios Firmware. However this does not work out of the box for Linux guests with grub bootloader even with grub serial settings.
Replacing grub with syslinux/extlinux made my Debian 8.7.1 amd64 run. No problems so far. This should work for other distros too.
