Yes, the change from X200 to X220 made my wlan experience at home worse. 
But I have USB3 now ;-)

It doesn't feel as bad as you describe it but in priciple the same
experience here, see above.

I never tested with other operating systems. I thought wlan on X220
was just far worse than on X200.

I got only slightly better reception but have a working connection with
it:

yes, it blinks when ifconfig status is "status: no carrier".
