I need to clarify this question better.

A network printer can be:

1. A direct network from computer A to the networked printer.

2. Connected by USB, serial, parallel, Wifi box that converts into a
network connection to the printer.
For example, I have several of these "print servers" that have a serial
and parallel connection which is then sent out over the network.

3. Sent to another computer over the network which that computer
connects to the printer independently over the network, USB, serial,
parallel connection(s).

The need for firmware isn't obvious.
For example, hplip-gui uses CUPS software to connect to the HP website
where you agree to their license and get the firmware download.
Too many of these ports require CUPS software to work.

I want to eliminate CUPS.
However, PPD databases like foomatic are necessary to keep using.

A question I need to add:

Do any of your printers directly support PostScript?
