I think nbSMTP ("no-brainer SMTP") would be perfect for you. You can find it on
http://nbsmtp.ferdyx.org/
Download, compile, edit a simple config file and put something like
set sendmail = "/usr/local/bin/nbsmtp" in your muttrc. Works great and
takes only a short time to set up. No need to fight with the sendmail
beast ;)
