You may want to just get some first-hand experience: compare the
(Open, Net and Free) BSD's yourself. Think of what (set of) task(s)
you want to accomplish and your other requirements. Start with the
installation routines, continue with configuring the system and your
applications, etc.

For your case, only your own judgement is final. Get three simple hard
drives and create test installations for the hardware you intend to
use. Testing and experimenting early will save you major headaches
later on.

If the above seems to tell you to go ahead and try doing your work on
all three of the BSD's, you're right. Doing so will get you some
BSD-experience at the very least; likely also a sound judgement on
where to go next.
