installed on this system don't match the OS version and are from sometime
after 5.0 (possibly from a -current snapshot). This isn't supported,

Probably the easiest way out of this problem for now with minimum
impact on the machine is to try building mcrypt from ports. If you already
have a ports tree on the machine,

cd /usr/ports/security/mcrypt && make install

if not then you'll want to fetch a copy of the 5.0 ports tree,
start with

Sensible. And as you're new to the OS I'd suggest installing on a scratch
machine or VM to get to learn things a bit better, and try an upgrade via that
route (including updating packages) before attempting it on an important
machine.
