I thought about that; I don't have sndiod starting with the system and I
thought it might be the problem so I did (as root) /etc/rc.d/sndiod start
and I don't see it in ps ax. So I really don't know how to tell if it's
running but it doesn't not seem to be, and there is nothing in
/var/log/messages from sndiod.

Checking further...whoops, I had set rc.conf.local to NO for sndiod. That
apparently doesn't even allow it to run from the command line. That was it,
it is now fixed! I ASSumed the rc.conf.local was just for startup and I did
not realize it would stop me from starting sndiod manually, but it does.

Thank you and everybody who helped on the Loongson support and all the
OpenBSD developers. I've been flogging this box mercilessly for over a week
and it is like an anvil.
