Just so I understand you correctly:

- Your thinkpad x201s has a built-in DisplayPort interface.
- You have a docking station which also has a DisplayPort interface.
- You can plug your laptop into various and sundry projectors and
external monitors *via its built-in DisplayPort connector* and it will
work without /etc/X11/xorg.conf tinkering.
- You do however experience the aforedescribed issues if you attempt
to use any display device with the docking station's DisplayPort
connector.

Is this correct?

Actually, scratch that, my googling just now seems to indicate that
your thinkpad x201s doesn't have a built-in DisplayPort connector at
all. So you're using not just two different connectors, but two
different types of connectors, right? You're really using the laptop's
built-in external DE15F VGA connector with those miscellaneous
monitors and projectors that work automagically, and the DisplayPort
connector only exists on your docking station and doesn't fully work
without xorg.conf tinkering as per above.

Is this correct now?

As you can see, I'm guessing somewhat, due to the gaps in your problem
description.
