i think it's great that this thread went on so long an no one answered
the question. the answer is: you add <SHIFT> to the key sequence and
it prevents the <CTRL><ALT> from releasing. so--hold down <SHIFT> and
hit <CTRL><ALT><F1> to get to the console.
