Setup a dhcp/bootp server along with tftpd on an exiting openbsd / linux box, put bsd.rd on there and boot of that over the network using boop()/bsd (as suggested in the INSTALL.sgi document). This worked fine for me.
p.s. you'll need a serial console of sorts as that's the only way sgi/obsd will run at the moment.
