So I have been scouring the archives for two days now and havent
found anything related to this. So I am just going to post this
question and hope I dont get flamed. If a discussion about this exists
could you please just point me in the right direction. Thanks!
In short, what would it take to go from Mesa 7. with OpenGL 2.0 support
to get Mesa capability for OpenGL ES 2.0? How many man hours
considering that es 2.0 is a reduced version of 2.0.
Basically we are 15 grad level coders with experience in OpenGL
es 2.0 already. We keep saying that the only reason people use windows
is for games. So we are thinking about a summer project that might let
us test this theory. We would be using mojohandhelds ubuntu distro on
the new smartphone prototypes and are getting the power vr (graphics
card drivers), so that the performance is slightly better than a low
end pc. Alternatively we can look into Canonicals support of arm
processors when they release in April.
So running Linux games might not be able to match D3D on a PC (true
linux, not cedega), but by running mesa3d with opengl es 2.0 support on
a new smartphone 2.0 you could achieve performance that no windows
mobile, or psp could match. Since its the full desktop distro (not
"debian mobile", like maemo) then the same games could be played on a
pc... Linux games by default would now be the most cross platform
gaming environment and could achieve graphics on par with the ps3 (as
it also uses opengl es 2.0).
