Another possibility to get your dev environment up and running very quickly
is to use Vagrant <http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Vagrant>.

Ori has been working very hard on setting it up for all platforms, and IMO
this should be pushed as our preferred method for new development (and
possibly old dev as well).

Basically this is a set of scripts that will download and configure a linux
virtual machine, and set up all the needed databases and mediawiki
configuration files. The actual MediaWiki code will remain on the host
machine, making development much easier.
