Sorry - my wiki uses "simpleCatcha". I've just tried to change to
"MathCatcha" following the instructions in
path/to/wiki/extensions/ConfirmEdit/MathCaptcha
(version from May 6 2011)
and edited only "LocalSettings.php". That led to the error message

Es ist ein Datenbankfehler aufgetreten. Der Grund kann ein
Programmierfehler sein. Die letzte Datenbankabfrage lautete:
(SQL-Abfrage versteckt)
aus der Funktion "MathRenderer::_recall". Die Datenbank meldete den
Fehler "1267: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_german2_ci,IMPLICIT) and
(utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation '=' (db2.variomedia.de)".

I can edit the database via phpMyAdmin (or other tools).
