This is precisely what I'm talking about. For the most part, you see the
huge MP3 followings because people already have the equipment. I can't
fathom telling people to get a computer set-up just so they can amass MP3s.

I've already got 22GB of drive space, burner, DSL, etc. etc. WHY NOT?

You see the huge explosion of MP3s because the biggest music market are all
now living in dorms with computers of their own and for the most part, the
speakers are good enough for your typical college music listening
experience. Hell, I swore by my Altec Lansing ACS-48. One of the best pc
speakers I ever owned. I thought I was picky. Many students are happy
enough w/ whatever speakers that they got bundled w/ their systems.

Now, not only do these kids have computers of their own, they're on the
university's T1 lines!

Then factor in that many of them are quite computer savvy and that buying
these additional equipments not only can they have portable music but
simply "more kick-ass" system... It's not a question whether MP3 or MD
sound better. It's a question of convenience. And gathering from what I've
read so far, for most people on this list, MDs are more convenient.

For many of the MP3 demographics, however, MDs are cool... but hey, you've
got a computer, you've got an MD...

My own story? I transferred in my sophomore year and finally got ethernet,
blahblahblah. MP3s. With 1.3GB hdd, I was running out of space! My friend,
with his 2.1GB drive, had a little time to relax but was soon out of space.
We didn't have money to buy burners then. What did I do? I recorded them to
MDs. 2 MDs and I gave up. It was one of the dumbest, stupid and pointless
exercise I've ever known so far. MP3s kinda died down for my friends and I
until we both got hard drive upgrade, etc. etc. then we realized, "Hey, we
can save these mp3s now!"

But then, I wouldn't be surprised if most people only read the first five
sentences and immediately retort to my "Why not" question. *sigh*
