I did a New Years Party last night at a restaurant in Los Angeles using
MiniDiscs. While a huge crowd failed to materialize for whatever reason
(people being afraid of going out New Years Eve 1999/New Years Morning
2000) the people who were there danced and I was paid handsomely. It was
a bit different as I had to buy cables at Sam Ash to run their house
mixer and JBL speakers instead of my own sound equipment. Luckily, all
that worked. What was really annoying was the JVC XMR70 would not leave
shuffle mode, no matter what. I had a Sony MZR55 for backup, but it was
more problematic than the JVC XMR70, being very picky about which discs
it would spin and you only have a short amount of time to get everything
ready when you are segueing dance or dinner music so I just used the JVC
XMR70 as best I could shuffling to whatever track I wanted, then pausing
it until play. The beeping on the remote everytime I punched a button on
it was a pain in the ass as well. I'm going to try to figure out why the
JVC XMR70 wouldn't exit the shuffle mode (no, it was not the hold
switch). Next time, I'll use the Sony MDS-JA20ES easier to operate, big
bright display. I was trying to keep everything as compact as possible
this time since I had limited work space (which didn't help) and about
500 MiniDiscs (which of course I had to make sure I kept in order.) The
other MD recorder I used the JVC XMD1 (really glad I had it) performed
flawlessly and the display was very easy to read, compared to the
backlit remote only display of the JVC XMR70 that stays lit for only a
few scant seconds.
