*1. Teach for America*

Teach For America <https://www.teachforamerica.org/index.htm> is the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates and professionals---of all majors, backgrounds, and career interests---who commit to teach for two years in urban and rural low-income communities and become lifelong leaders in expanding educational opportunity. As you may already know, only a small faction of children growing up in low-income communities will have math and science teachers who hold at least a minor in a relevant subject. Because of this math and science achievement is one of the lowest scores seen in schools across the country. You have the power to change this and inspire future generations of doctors, scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. Right now, 8,200 corps members <http://www.teachforamerica.org/corps/index.htm> have begun teaching in 39 regions <http://www.teachforamerica.org/corps/placement_regions/placement_regions.htm> across the country, while over 20,000 Teach For America alumni <http://www.teachforamerica.org/alumni/index.htm> continue working from inside and outside the field of education for the fundamental changes necessary to ensure educational excellence and equity.

Join the movement and*apply <https://www.teachforamerica.org/online/info/signUp.wbfl?_flowId=signUp-flow&_flowExecutionKey=e1s1>* to the 2011 Teach For America corps.**

4. Student Survey for Operation Excellence*

Dear Cal Student,

You're invited to access the UC Berkeley Operational Excellence Student Services Initiative's summary of what we learned from Cal students. Is our "What Cal Students Want" list on target? Did we miss a critical issue? Tell us what YOU think! Please access the summary and share your thoughts by taking our quick and confidential survey here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RYV92HZ

In order to consider your comments in our recommendations, we need to hear from you no later than Tuesday, February 1.
Background Information
Gathering student insights is absolutely critical to improving student services for all Cal students. The OE Student Services Initiative team spent fall 2010 collecting student stories through a number of sources,
including:
-- nine focus groups for undergrad, grad, and professional school students
-- meetings with student advisory groups, and
-- UCUES and Operational Excellence survey data.

These sources paint a consistent picture, revealing the set of common themes found in the survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/RYV92HZ

To learn more about the OE Student Services Initiative, please visit: http://campuslife.berkeley.edu/studentaffairs/sa-oe Thank you taking our survey and making the most of this additional opportunity to make your voice heard!
Go Bears!

*6. DeCal: Stem Cell Outreach and Education, begins 2/1/11*

We'd like to share an exciting community outreach opportunity for Cal students and researchers. We are offering a 1-unit DeCal called "Stem Cell Outreach and Education." Participants visit high schools and community colleges around the Bay Area and give presentations about regenerative medicine and stem cell research.

This course is intended for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs with a reasonably strong background in the biological sciences. As a participant, you will not only have the opportunity to present to high school biology students---you will help us refine our presentation and build new teaching resources. The teaching tools we've developed in the past include PowerPoint presentations, lessons, hands-on activities, and labs. We are partnered with the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), so the teaching materials produced will be hosted on the CIRM website <http://cirm.ca.gov/Stem_Cell_CIRM_Hosted>, with the potential to be accessed by educators anywhere. Last semester, a number of our volunteers received acknowledgment for their contributions to the CIRM website.

A major emphasis of our group is to teach budding scientists and doctors how to engage lay audiences with current topics in stem cell research, medicine, ethics, and policy. This involves weekly meetings in which we will discuss our existing presentation, as well as our stem cell education curriculum, which was recently featured in the SF Chronicle <http://articles.sfgate.com/2010-07-31/news/22005326_1_stem-regenerative-medicine-cell>.

If you are interested, please drop by *2066 VLSB* on *Tuesday, February 1^st , 7-9pm* for an information session. CCNs will be given to students at the first meeting. We are happy to allow students to audit the course; those who wish to take the course for credit will be required to participate in giving at least two presentations per semester. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>. The meetings are ADA accessible and snacks will be provided.
