When the target item is a directory, IMHO it should it should behave like when it's not a symlink but a directory in the list, exactly how mc does behave normally. It's just about cascading the size processing and displaying it, whatever the target item is. If some target item types are possibly difficult to handle, then they should be ignored, it's not about asking mc to take risks or become slow or buggy, it's about providing the user some pertinent information, if possible or reasonable (better than the symlink size heh).
