I successfully started a MaxDB 7.5.00.34 instance with linuxthreads on a Debian
testing system with kernel 2.6.18 (even though it's a amd64 kernel, the instance
was in a 32-bit chroot). I think your problem is rather the way how Ubuntu is
building its glibc.
So in Jan's case, I'd still give the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL variant a try...
